Lakeshore Sports & Fitness
Dear David - I saw your email in a paragraph about holiday parties at LSF in a recent newsletter.
Our family is a long time member of LSF and it's predecessor LAC. We have never been able to eat any food sold at the club. Our kids have severe allergies to nuts - tree nuts and peanuts. They must avoid potential cross contamination by any nut protein "dust". So generally, I must ask about the ingredients and prep conditions for each item, AND the ingredients and prep conditions for any pre-prepared ingredients. Hazards that require my inquiry include breads, breaded items, fryers, chocolate, seasoning blends, sauces. Can you tell me if it is possible for them to eat in any of the venues at the club? If so, what can they eat?
Further, if we were to have parties (e.g. birthday) at the club, would your staff/facilities be able to provide food that is safe for them?
Christine
I spoke with the food and beverage department today; the consensus is as follows....The kitchen is very hesitant to make promises regarding food prep to individuals who have severe allergies. We have a small kitchen and we use a lot of nut products, as well as use our ovens to prepare items that contain nuts. I know that the pizzas are a nut free product and all that goes into the pizza is nut free, but if the children are sensitive to nut dust then that is where we get worried.
Sincerely,
Dave Klein | Program Coordinator | 773.770.2423 | lakeshoreSF.com

Dream Dinners (dream dinners.com) - not safe enough
I talked with Barb, the Back of House Manager, and Amanda, the Community Events Manager about your family's situation. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the amount of precaution needed is taken. After a little research, we found that many of our foods are processed in plants that also process peanuts and/or tree nuts.
I appreciate your interest and concern. I hope that I have been helpful. Please, feel free to contact me with any other questions.
Best Wishes,
Erica

Standard Market restaurant - NOT SAFE
Thank you for your note. While we do our best to avoid cross-contamination, we do use peanuts and tree nuts in the food made in the Bakery, Deli, and at the Grill, and we cannot guarantee that the surfaces the food is prepared on are entirely nut-free.
We do, however, carry a variety of nut-free Pantry products that have been prepared in nut-free kitchens, including Don't Go Nuts Soy Nut Butter, Dr. Lucy's cookies, and others.

Pepperidge Farm - Mostly Safe
- No PF products contain peanuts.
- Some PF products contain tree nuts: some cookies and layer cakes!
- PF cookies and cakes may be made on shared equipment, but they do an allergy wash. They cannot tell you which items share lines with nut-containing products on call-in. They will forward questions to the research department. 24-48hrs.
- If a PF product has any risk of cross-contamination, that risk is boldly stated as a "may contain statement on the label." This would happen when PF feels their allergy wash is insufficient.
- If a PF product actually contains tree nuts, the tree nut is included in the ingredient list but NOT HIGHLIGHTED.
- Conclusion: if you rely on their "allergy wash" then you can rely on their labeling.

Garlic Bread - New York Texas Toast by Marzetti's is safe
Thanks for your inquiry about New York Brand Garlic Bread.
We appreciate your patience while we researched your inquiry and we are glad to provide our response. We hope it is useful.
The facilities that produce our New York brand Texas Garlic Toast do not use peanuts or tree nuts.
Thank you for thinking of T. Marzetti Company as a source of information.

Thank you for contacting us about New York Brand® Texas Garlic Toast.
Control of allergens is extremely important to T. Marzetti Company. There are a number of steps we take to assure allergens are controlled within our facilities. First, we identify on our label all of the major allergens as defined by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) according to their labeling requirements.
From a production standpoint, it is not always possible to have dedicated lines at our facilities that produce allergen-free or allergen-specific products. However, our trained associates do follow special handling and cleaning procedures to reduce the risk of cross contamination:
• Peanut and tree nut products are clearly identified and marked upon receipt in the facility.
• Any formulas using these allergens are also clearly identified. Formulas using these ingredients are scheduled at the end of a production run after allergen-free products have been produced.
• Our sanitation crews do a complete breakdown and detailed cleaning of the equipment after running products containing tree nuts or peanuts. The line is inspected and tested by our Quality Assurance department to assure the procedure has been followed and the line has been thoroughly cleaned.
We understand the challenges of managing a diet with allergen concerns and take pride in providing confidence to our consumers that we have an allergen control program that allows them to enjoy many of our products.
We hope this information is helpful. Thanks again for contacting us.
Sincerely,

Baking powder - not all safe?
I never thought about checking baking powder. But apparently clabber girl makes a point of disclosing that it is nut-free. So the next time I buy baking powder, I am going to look very closely!
"Our facility is peanut free, however we do manufacture products with tree nuts. These products (gelatins, puddings and cookies) are not manufactured in the same building as the baking powder and baking soda that we produce, so they are segregated.
Any and all baking powders produced by the Clabber Girl Corporation do not contain any spices, flavors or colorings. They do not contain any of the following commonly recognized sources of allergenic responses: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean, mollusks, tree nuts, wheat, barley, rye, peanuts, and soybeans. Examples of the food products most commonly known to cause allergic reactions as stated above, are not present in any of the ingredients which are in any of the baking powder formulas produced by the Clabber Girl Corporation, corn starch, bicarbonate of soda, sodium aluminum sulfate, acid phosphate of calcium."

Dried Cranberries - Ocean Spray are SAFE
Ocean Spray products are safe, other than their trail mix. Trail mix is processed in a separate facility. No nuts in their cranberry operations.
Medjool Dates - MOST ARE NOT SAFE, but Trader Joe's is sometimes safe!
http://www.naturaldelights.com/
is the website for Bard Valley - Sorry but they process pistachios and almonds (and coconut) on the same equipment.
Dole Dates (pitted whole or chopped) are also processed in the same facility as many nuts.
Trader Joe's has a hotline number you can call (or get the store to call) to verify if their current vendor for a particular product processes the product in a facility that also handles peanuts or tree nuts. In Chicago, presently, the Medjool dates and the figs are processed in a facility that is free of any tree nut or peanut protein!

Nut free Charoset for Passover
Please keep chilled. Stir before serving! Makes enough for 15-20
3 Gala apples - fresh - peel and slice into 1/2-3/4" thick chunky lengths
1 Honeycrisp apples - fresh - peel and slice into 1/2-3/4" thick chunky lengths
1 Bartlett pears - fresh and very un-ripe - peel and slice into 1/2-3/4" thick chunky lengths
6 Dried Medjool dates - Trader Joe's brand - no nuts in the facility
10 Dried Black Mission figs - Trader Joe's brand - no nuts in the facility
10 Dried Apricots (with sulphur dioxide) - Trader Joe's brand - no nuts in the facility
1/2 c Ocean Spray Craisins (dried cranberries, infused with blueberry juice) - no nuts in the facility
In food processor: Layer 2 apples then sprinkle 1/2 of the dried fruits on top, then layer the remaining apples/pear and sprinkle the remaining dried fruits on top. Pulse to get the top layer to circulate to the bottom for even chopping. Stop and re-distribute by hand if the bottom is getting pureed while the top has yet to be chopped. Get it to a texture that you like. Put it all in a bowl. I use the unripe pear to replace the texture of nuts - it stays crisp and gives the charoset more body.
Then mix the liquids:
1/4 c Welch's white grape juice
3 T Busy Bee Organic Honey
1/4 t McCormick's cinnamon
juice of 1/2 Lemon - fresh
Pour by tablespoons full over the fruit and stir in, to taste. The fruit will give off more juice, so don't make it too soupy!

I noticed that Peapod here in Chicago is carrying your dinner rolls. My kids are allergic to tree nuts and peanuts and must avoid cross-contamination in their foods. Are your dinner rolls safe from potential cross-contamination by tree nut or peanut protein? I mean to ask you about not just ingredients, but equipment used to manufacture the rolls, as well as any possibility of nut protein particles landing in the dough or in the package during the prep, handling or packaging process. Please let me know!
thanks,
Christine Young=

Seventh Generation products - safe
Response Via Email (Sue Holden) 10/02/2012 02:39 PM
Hi Chris,
Thanks for taking the time to write to us.
None of our products have nuts in them, such as peanuts, almonds, etc. However, just about all our products are based on coconut or palm kernel oil. Some folks consider coconut as a tree nut, some do not. This would fall into your allergist information.
I hope this is helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Warm regards,
Sue

I must avoid even the risk of cross-contamination by any tree nut or peanut protein.
