my own tips to get through life, and a catalogue of manufacturer responses to the question, "are your products safe for someone who needs to avoid cross-contamination by peanut and tree nut dust?"

Brown's Chicken - NOT SAFE
My son was invited to a party where Brown's Chicken was the menu. Well, a call to Brown's Chicken hq was transferred several times and I had to conclude that they dont get this inquiry often, and that they don't really know who knows about their allergy practices. Finally, a customer service rep said that they cannot speak to allergy safety at all because their vendors are ever changing and they cannot represent their vendors' practices or ingredients. So we'll just skip all food from Brown's.

Eating Ice Cream Out
I found these great tupperware-like individual "cupcake" holders at Crate & Barrel. I use them to carry ice cream cones (the light colored cake ones, which I have separately verified are safe) in our backpack. I always carry 2, in case 1 gets broken. I also always carry a disposable cup and spoon of our own. When we go to a soft serve store, I only get vanilla, and I ask what flavors have preceded the vanilla in the spout, to assure that the equipment has been through multiple cleanings before this vanilla was put in. Then, we get softserve in our own cake cone or in our own cup/spoon, and get outta that store!

Williams Sonoma - not safe
They use a blanket "may contain..." statement because they dont know what their manufacturers' practices are. Their products are rebranded.
Brownberry/Arnold, Thomas, Entemanns, Freihofers, Boboli - NOT SAFE!
They bake varieties that contain nuts and nut flour and ground nuts.
Their facility risks cross contamination.
They recalled some varieties recently due to failure to disclose nut ingredients.
Given that, I'm not calling their labels reliable.
